Professor Gordts in Belgium recently developed a new technique. He introduced a
technique where the laparoscopy is done through the vagina and not through the abdomen.
The procedure is called transvaginal endoscopy (TVE).

With this approach no incisions in the woman’s abdomen are necessary.
This technique has isubstantial advantages compared with classical laparoscopy:
1. It is less invasive. The patient can go back to work the next day and experiences only minimal
pain after the procedure.
2. The gynaecological organs are seen in its normal anatomical positions, which allow better
evaluation of the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
3. It is quicker and cheaper to perform.
4. Reconstructive procedures can be performed without making additional incisions in the abdomen.
5. It can be performed under sedation or local anaesthetic.
It also has certain disadvantages:
1. Major surgery like severe endometriosis and removal of fibroids will need a conventional
laparoscopy (through the navel).
2. Only the pelvis can be seen. Structures like the appendix or the gallbladder cannot be seen.
3. It is not indicated for pathology of the pouch of Douglas (the back of the uterus).
